The Bael fruit is also called Bengal quince, Indian quince, golden apple, holy fruit, stone apple, bel, bela, sirphal, maredoo and other dialectal names in India. The fruit is round, pyriform, oval, or oblong 5-20 cm in diameter with a thin, hard, woody shell grey-green in colour. It is dotted with aromatic, minute oil glands. Inside, there is a hard central core and 8 to 20 faintly defined triangular segments, with thin, dark-orange walls, filled with aromatic, pale-orange, sweet, more or less astringent pulp. Embedded in the pulp are 10 to 15 flattened-oblong seeds about 1 cm long with woolly hairs and each enclosed in a sack of adhesive, transparent mucilage that solidifies on drying.

You can eat the pulp as it is or mix with sugar for breakfast as is a common practice in Indonesia. Or you can make a milkshake out of it. A beverage is also made by combining Bael fruit pulp with that of tamarind. You can make Jam out of it or some people prefer pickling it.

Bael has several health benefits - let’s talk about a couple of them - the juice of ripe bael fruit, when mixed with ghee and added to daily diet, prevents heart diseases. This is a traditional method which has been used for ages to treat diseases like heart strokes and attacks. Bael fruit is also said to be the best natural medicine to cure constipation. Adding a small amount of black pepper and salt to the pulp and consuming it regularly removes toxins from the intestines. It can also be taken in the form of sherbet to cure constipation.

Fruit delivered will be raw to semi-ripe you can keep it on the table for a few days to get ripened. The fruit turns yellowish on ripening. Fruit delivered can be held for 7 days at room temperature. Thereafter mould is likely to develop at the stem-end and any crack in the rind.
