The
abiu fruit
is a tropical delicacy known for its smooth, yellow skin and soft, creamy pulp. Native to the Amazon region, its flavor is sweet and reminiscent of caramelized custard or vanilla. The fruit is packed with antioxidants and vitamins, making it a nutritious treat. Abiu thrives in warm climates and is enjoyed fresh or in desserts and smoothies.
A ripe abiu has a unique taste. The creamy white flesh is extremely delicate, lightly sweet, with a strong hint of caramel and vanilla.
The Abiu is the fruit of Pouteria caimito a tropical fruit tree belonging to the same family as the humble Sapota but it is considered one of the best of the sapotes due to having the sweet, caramel-like taste of sapodilla with a smoother texture.
Cut the fruit in half lengthwise and use a spoon to scoop out the soft flesh inside.
About Manjanna Shetty Family Farm (MSFF):
MSFF is an all organic fruit farm located in Bellare of Sullia Taluk in Dakshina Kannada. Some of the fruits grown here are rambutan, mangosteen, avocado, papaya, banana, longan and some more fruits for collection. Along with these, we also grow rice, turmeric, pepper, coconut, arecanut, vegetables round the year.
The inputs used for the farm are cowshed manure, Jeevamritha, oil cakes, charred soil, wood ash, WDC. Pest control is left to be handled by the plants naturally and under severe conditions we do use wood ash, neem oil, fermented coconut water, cow urine.
Chethan Shetty, general farmer in MSFF is a mechanical engineer with industrial sales background, had worked for a German firm for 7 years in Bangalore. With an intention to live in the family raised farm, shifted for good in 2017 and set up the fruit orchard. This is our second commercial crop of rambutans.
