Summer is on and so is Mango season! We are excited to bring to your plate King of Mangoes - Ratnagiri Alphonso ! Recently, mangoes from this region have been granted the Geographical Indication tag - they are famous for sweetness, richness and distinct flavour. The Alphonso variety is named after Afonso de Albuquerque, a Portuguese general and military expert. The Portuguese introduced grafting on mango trees to produce extraordinary varieties like Alphonso.

The gradation is based on the weight of raw fruit when harvested and packed. During ripening weight loss of 15 to 20 % takes place and hence the average weight as well as weight of individual fruit is likely to be less than the mentioned in grade.

GRADE A1 : Average weight of fruit about 250 gm (each individual fruit 241 gm to 280 gm) when harvested.

These alphonsos are from the farms of Vinay Ketkar in Chiplun and are grown completely without any chemicals. He has been following natural farming techniques. For pest control he used neem extract, dashparni ark, green chilli-ginger extract, solar light traps during night time and yellow sticky traps across the farm. With these traps he was able to control pests during flowering season. He also used pheromone traps for fruit fly control. For soil nourishment, dry cow dung was applied before start of rainy season and during rainy season he used jeevamrut for soil drenching. Before and during flowering Jeevamrut spraying was done. The farm is registered with Maharashtra Government under MANGONET and is under third party NPOP group certification.

Here you can see how heavenly mangoes land from the heavens in Vinay’s orchard :-).
