Coconut sugar is made from the sap of flowers of coconut tree and has a lower glycemic index than regular sugar and also has small amounts of several vitamins and minerals, unlike the empty calories of regular sugar. It contains trace amounts of vitamin C, potassium, phosphorous, magnesium, calcium, zinc, iron and copper. Coconut sugar also provides small amounts of phytonutrients, such as polyphenols, flavonoids and anthocyanidin, and antioxidants. It has a naturally caramel flavour and is a healthy substitute to a normal table sugar (cane sugar) or any refined/ chemical sweeteners. It helps in regulation of blood pressure and also improves bone health.
Coconut sugar is also a more earth friendly choice than regular sugar because coconut trees require minimal water compared to sugarcane cultivation.
