Gardening
Green chillies are a versatile and popular ingredient used in various cuisines around the world for their heat and flavor. They come in different varieties, each varying in spiciness and size. Green chillies are used fresh, dried, or pickled and can add a spicy kick to curries, stir-fries, sauces, and more.
Climate and Soil:
Green chillies thrive in warm, tropical climates with temperatures between 20°C to 30°C. They are sensitive to frost.
They prefer well-draining, loamy soil enriched with organic matter. The ideal soil pH is between 6.0 and 7.5.
Sowing Seeds:
Sow seeds indoors or in seed trays 6-8 weeks before the last frost date.
Transplant the seedlings to a sunny spot when they are 3-4 inches tall and the temperature is warm enough. Ensure the soil is fertile and well-prepared.
Spacing and Sunlight:
Plant the seedlings about 18-24 inches apart.
Green chillies require full sunlight, ideally 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily.
Watering :
Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water at the base of the plants to avoid fungal diseases.
Reduce watering as the chillies begin to mature to enhance their spiciness.
Fertilizing:
Use a balanced fertilizer or compost to enrich the soil at the time of planting.
Feed the plants once every few weeks with a potassium-rich fertilizer once they start flowering.
Pest and Disease Control:
Green chillies can be affected by aphids, whiteflies, and spider mites. Neem oil or organic insecticides can help manage these pests.
Keep an eye out for fungal diseases like powdery mildew, which can be prevented by proper spacing and watering at the base of the plants.
Harvesting :
Chillies can be harvested when they are firm and green, usually around 60-75 days after transplanting.
Pick them regularly to encourage more fruiting.
No of seeds per pkt : 60
Germination Rate: 70%
