Horse gram seeds are a hardy and nutritious legume native to India. Known by various regional names like Kulthi in Hindi, Hurali in Kannada, Kollu in Tamil, and Ulavalu in Telugu, these seeds have been an integral part of traditional Indian diets and farming systems for centuries. Revered for their high resilience and adaptability, horse gram plants thrive even in arid, drought-prone regions, making them a vital crop in sustainable and regenerative agriculture.

These seeds are small, oval-shaped, and typically reddish-brown to black in color, with a slightly rough outer coating. Packed with nutrients, horse gram seeds are considered a powerhouse of plant-based protein, dietary fiber, iron, calcium, and antioxidants. They are particularly rich in polyphenols and flavonoids, which contribute to their medicinal properties.

Horse gram has been traditionally valued in Ayurvedic and Siddha medicine for its ability to aid weight loss, improve digestion, manage diabetes, and reduce cholesterol levels. It is also believed to be effective in breaking kidney stones and treating respiratory conditions like asthma and bronchitis.

In culinary use, horse gram seeds are commonly soaked and boiled before being used in dishes like kollu rasam, hurali saaru, sprouts salads, or dry curries. The legume has a distinct earthy flavor and is often slow cooked to enhance its taste and digestibility. When sprouted, the seeds become even more nutrient-dense and are used in salads or stir-fries.

About Farm:
Group of 4 friends - Anand, Raghu, Rohit, Vijay started Panchavati Natural Farm situated in a valley in the Meagiris, near the Cauvery, Panchavati natural farm aims to grow sustainable, healthy, locally relevant food. We have started growing local, seasonal plants such as groundnut, ragi, horse gram, and sesame.

We have also started a 5-layer orchard. There are also 3 old tamarind trees, yielding a locally recognized variety called "Urigam". We use a synthetic chemical free approach and are using desi cow produce - jeevamrut, panchagavya - for growing healthy crops.
