This week we bring to you Nendran bananas. These are native to Kerala, where they are consumed as fruit as well as used for processing. This elongated fruit has pale yellow color and silky pulp. Nendran bananas are very good for pregnant women and athletes as they are a power house of nutrients. They boost the immune system and keep bones strong. They also ease digestion and prevent stomach ulcers.
These bananas are cultivated in the farms of Mr. Joseph Maprakavil in Mampoil village, Kannur District. He has been practicing organic farming in his 20 acres of land which shares its boundary with Coorg forest. His farm is group certified under INDOCERT organic certification.
You can store them in a cool and dry place. Bananas will take 3-4 days to ripen if you are receiving it raw. You can wrap them in paper bags to hasten the ripening. Upon ripening these bananas are likely to have a lot of black spots on the skin - that is normal, and the fruit inside will be good. Due to water weight loss, the weight of one unit can vary between 0.9 to 1.1 kg depending on your day and time of delivery.
