Organic Himalayan Turmeric Powder
is a mountain special from our upper Tons Valley!
Our turmeric is commonly known as 'Pahari Haldi' and is grown extensively across in Uttarakhand. Turmeric is grown in the lower altitude villages in Tons and neighbouring valleys. These turmeric cultivars are heirloom varieties that have been cultivated by farmers in the mountains for generations. They have saved seeds that they find especially high in curcumin and have been propogating them.
Every family grows its requirement of turmeric in a corner of their fields as per their annual requirement. Harvested turmeric is hand pounded by women in the family and sun dried. The sun dried turmeric is then made into a paste or powdered as required.
Farmers who have turmeric which is surplus to their annual food and seed purpose, sell to earn money. We are supporting these hard working farmers by finding a fair market for their turmeric. We pay a fair price that compensates them for growing turmeric in remote fields which don't even have access to a road. The harvest has to be brought on mules to the nearest road and the transported to our processing center.
We procure dried turmeric from women farmers and then traditionally cold-grind it to bring you turmeric powder that is rich in essential oils.
Our turmeric is completely organic, grown using only natural compost and cow manure. No inorganic fertilizer or chemical pesticides are used. We are in the process of helping these farmers getting their produce certified organic very soon.

Tons Trails is a travel company ! We began work in 2013, in a small way, putting the tiny himalayan village of Kalap ( www.kalap.in ) in tourism (and literally on Google) maps!
We did this the hard way by narrating the story of the destination and training the local people in hospitality practices such as running a homestay and guiding tourists.
In 2017, other villages in the Tons Valley, asked us to work with them too. So, now we are working to bring economic empowerment through tourism to 37 villages!
Now, we aggregate products produced by the local communities here and help find a fair price for them. 2% of the revenues are earmarked for supporting Kalap Trust.
